DroneControl recently had the privilege of partnering with over 300 local first responders to support the Lörrach Fire Department’s drone team in a comprehensive mass-casualty training exercise at the Katzenberg train tunnel in Germany. This intense, real-time simulation involved 170 role players to recreate a high-stakes emergency situation: an emergency stop of an ICE train, a subsequent fire outbreak, and an immediate need to evacuate the tunnel and provide treatment to 50 simulated casualties.
The event showcased the critical role of drone technology in first response. As the first to deploy, the drone team was able to stream live aerial views to the command team even while en route, offering a situational overview before arriving on-site. Using DroneControl’s FirstResponder application, the command team, stationed in a portable command center adjacent to the landing area, could seamlessly communicate with the drone pilot, control the gimbal camera, capture and share photos and video, and operate the drone remotely. Location-sharing through what3words further facilitated collaboration among the many first responder teams involved in the exercise.
The event also provided valuable insights, spotlighting potential enhancements in DroneControl’s solution to optimize disaster response. Some of these suggaestions are already planned for release on our 2024 roadmap, while others are under active evaluation for future updates.
A special thank-you goes to the Lörrach drone team for inviting DroneControl to participate and for sharing essential feedback during these recent simulated emergency scenarios. Seeing the professionalism and dedication of this volunteer team in action was truly inspiring.
